How a Personalised Book helps Toddlers Read with Confidence
If your toddler’s begun their new nursery term, you’ll no doubt have been encouraged by the teaching staff to keep sharing stories with your child.
To some, it may seem early days to be introducing a child to reading. Yet it’s been proven that reading to and with your small child contributes hugely to their development, especially when that’s done through a personalised book.
At flumbles, our stories of The Shnugglefluffles place your baby, toddler or young child front and centre of their own tales with their name and character – growing a love of language from their earliest days of education.

Why Sharing Special Stories Matters
All stories are valuable to share. But in a recent study, led by Natalia Kucirkova, a Senior Lecturer in Early Years and Childhood Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, results revealed that a personalised story was the best way to help your toddler develop their language skills.
The university-funded study found children were more engaged in a story that had been personalised just for them. It discovered toddlers were more communicative, and quicker to ask spontaneous questions that in turn prompted a discussion with their adults about their life experiences and the world around them.
Not only was the involvement with the stories more interactive whilst reading, the study also found that toddlers were more eager to engage with personalised books that were sitting on the shelf rather than those that are widely printed. Stories that had become familiar to the child through self-identification became those they were more likely remember – and pick up to enjoy.

Aiding Recall & Recognition through Personalised Books
As well as growing a love of reading through personalised books, Manchester Metropolitan University also found that toddlers who’d engaged with their own personalised stories had better success with the recognition, recall and repetition of words that forms an essential part of their next stage of childhood: their early years school days.
The world can feel unnerving to a small child encountering new experiences at every turn. But they’ll always find comfort – and confidence – in what they know. Including their own names, familiar characters and family members into a personalised story helps them navigate the narrative with the added excitement of seeing their own name and character in print.
Creating Special Memories with The Shnugglefluffles
Author of The Shnugglefluffles and father of two young boys, Adam, created the personalised stories knowing how much a love of reading has helped his own children’s development.

‘Our stories are completely customisable to spark both toddler imaginations and support their language learning,’ Adam says. ‘But it’s also about that familiarity and comfort.
Reading before bed is a powerful childhood memory throughout generations, and making that as personal as possible helps engage, comfort and support your toddler’s development from the earliest age.’
